Resourced Humans – Mini Soundbite Series

Purpose is living each day with pride and joy, creating a legacy that energises you and those around you.

By Mattelynn Romano
Senior HR Proffesional, Neve Jewels

Introduction

For Mattelynn Romano, purpose is not a distant goal but a daily practice. It is about joy, energy, and leaving a legacy that reflects who you are in every part of life. As someone who draws strength from her family, nature, and the people she supports at work, Mattelynn reminds us that HR is deeply human work. Her reflections show how purpose evolves through life’s chapters, and how connection and honesty within the community keep us going.

What does purpose mean to you?

“Purpose to me means that every aspect of your life is your legacy. It is something you can be proud of. If you are doing something that does not fill you with joy and energise you, then it is not your purpose. Purpose becomes clear when you feel like every day is the best day, a day you can be proud of. To me, purpose is being proud of what you are doing in every aspect of your life, leaving that legacy, and making sure you do not do anything that does not bring you joy or energy.”
Mattelynn reminds us that purpose is not an occasional spark but an everyday choice to do work and live a life that fuels joy and pride.

When do you feel most connected to your work?

“I feel most connected to my work when I am connected to the people that I work with.”
Connection is not abstract. For Mattelynn, it lives in relationships with colleagues and the human bonds that shape her work.

What does being resourced feel like to you?

“Being resourced for me means that the company values my input and gives just as much as it takes.”
To be resourced is to feel valued, to know that contribution is met with balance and respect.

What helps you stay grounded, especially in challenging moments?

“In challenging moments what helps me to stay grounded is my kids, my husband, and being in nature.”
Grounding often comes from returning to what is simple and true. For Mattelynn it is family and time outdoors.

What’s something you wish more people understood about what you do?

“I wish more people understood that HR is still an employee role. HR people still have their own career paths. People who work in HR are still humans, and we have our own needs and wants just like everyone else.”
It is easy to forget that those who support others also need support themselves. HR are humans too.

What kind of impact are you hoping to make in your job, even in small ways?

“The impact that I hope to make in my job really revolves around people. If I help someone figure out their career path, develop a new skill, or navigate a challenging time in life while balancing work, those are the wins for me. Connecting with other people is the biggest impact for me.”
Impact is measured in moments of growth and support. For Mattelynn, each person’s progress is a success.

What’s one small thing that helps you feel like yourself?

“A ritual or habit that makes me feel like myself is being in nature. Forest bathing, walking in the woods with my kids, or even playing in the rain together. Those moments really keep me grounded, especially in the worst of times.”
Nature offers perspective and joy, especially when shared with loved ones.

Has your sense of purpose changed over time?

“My sense of purpose has changed over time. I think purpose changes with every chapter of your life. A teenager’s purpose is not the same as a young woman’s purpose or a mother’s purpose. Purpose is defined differently in different aspects of life. As a mother my purpose is very different than it is as a sister or as a daughter. Purpose changes not only over time but across roles and relationships.”
Purpose is not static. It evolves as we grow, moving with us through the roles and seasons of life.

If you could share one message with this community, what would it be?

“My message to the Resourced Humans Collective would be to keep sharing your experiences. Keep opening up and being raw with each other because we are holding a lot and doing a lot every single day in a work environment where expectations keep pushing for more. We need more therapy, more coaching, and more mentorship between us so that we can grow and develop without feeling like we are crumbling.”
Mattelynn reminds us that honesty, vulnerability, and mutual support are not luxuries. They are the foundations of resilience.

Mattelynn’s reflections highlight the heart of this community. Her words are a reminder that HR professionals are human beings navigating their own needs while supporting others. By grounding in family, nature, and shared honesty, she shows how purpose can be lived each day and how community can carry us when expectations feel overwhelming.
